The Summer GLP-1 Plate: What to Eat to Maintain Energy
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Summer has a way of changing how we eat. When temperatures climb, and we find ourselves spending more time out in the blazing sun, it’s common to choose fresh fruit over heavy meals or to forget about lunch until late afternoon. Between backyard barbecues, beach days, vacations, and long afternoons outside, eating schedules can become a little more relaxed, too. It’s all part of the season. But if you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, that natural summertime dip in appetite can feel even more pronounced.

GLP-1 medications are designed to help reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which is part of what makes them so effective. Pair that with the appetite-suppressing effects of hot weather, and you might find yourself wondering if eating enough is suddenly harder than it used to be. While eating less may feel effortless, your body still relies on key nutrients to support everything from steady energy levels to muscle maintenance and overall well-being. Rather than focusing on eating bigger meals, think about getting more nutrition from the meals you already enjoy.

So, What Are GLP-1-Friendly Foods?

GLP-1-friendly foods are simply foods that pack a lot of nutrition into a relatively small serving. When your appetite is working overtime to stay quiet, reaching for protein, fiber, healthy fats, and hydrating produce can help your body get what it needs without leaving you feeling overly full.

As it turns out, some of the best foods for a low appetite are already in season. Like:

  • A bowl of Greek yogurt with fresh berries
  • Juicy peaches alongside cottage cheese
  • A crisp salad topped with grilled chicken

These can all feel refreshing when the idea of a hot, heavy meal just isn’t appealing. Even something as simple as a protein smoothie can be a quick and easy way to fit in nutrients on days when your appetite is nowhere to be found.

When Things Heat Up, Eat Fruits and Veggies

When the weather heats up, fruits and vegetables can pull double duty. They’re refreshing, naturally hydrating, and an easy way to add fiber and micronutrients to your plate. Cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, leafy greens, and berries help replenish fluids lost in the heat, and also add vitamins, minerals, and fiber to your plate. Pairing them with healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, or a sprinkle of nuts or seeds helps create a satisfying meal without feeling weighed down.

One of the biggest shifts to make while taking a GLP-1 medication is letting go of the idea that hunger has to be your reminder to eat. Between the medication and the summer heat, your appetite may stay quiet even when your body is in need of more fuel. Having easy, nutrient-dense staples in the fridge makes it easier to nourish yourself without having to cook an elaborate meal or force a large portion. It’s also worth paying attention to hydration. Since summer naturally increases your fluid needs, staying hydrated can help you feel your best. If plain water isn’t appealing, try adding citrus slices, berries, or fresh herbs for a little flavor, and aim to sip throughout the day rather than all at once during your mealtime.

The Takeaway

The goal isn’t to force yourself to eat when your appetite isn’t there, but to find foods that work with your body and your lifestyle. During the summer months, especially while taking a GLP-1 medication, it can help to focus less on the size of your meals and more on the nutrients they provide. Simple choices like protein-rich foods, colorful produce, and healthy fats can help you stay energized and nourished, even when a big meal isn’t what you’re craving.
